Many Food myths are prevalent not only in India but also in the world. What to eat, when to eat, and how often to eat, these are all questions that generally baffle everyone. Today we have scientific knowledge available and on the basis of that knowledge, we should not believe in food or Food myths. The most common food or Food myths that are still prevalent in our modern society are described below:-

1. Potatoes make you fat: –

Earlier people used to think that high carbohydrate food like rice and potato etc. increase your body weight. Therefore, they used to cut out carbohydrate-rich foods from their diet to reduce their weight. We now know that carbohydrates are the body’s preferred energy source. Potatoes don’t automatically make you fat. Therefore, you will not face any problem in consuming potatoes in moderation.

2. Fat-free products will help you in losing weight: –

If you consume foods labeled ‘Fat-free’, you will probably increase your weight even more. In fact, such food contains relatively more calories. These foods or meals usually contain about the same no. of calories as a regular meal (perhaps only slightly less). Additionally, people tend to eat foods with such labels in relatively large quantities because they have this misconception ‘that it has fewer calories. However, overall they consume more calories than a normal diet which increases their weight.

3. Eggs Increase cholesterol levels, so avoid them: –

Undoubtedly, eggs are good for health. One egg provides you with various nutrients like protein, vitamin A, B, D zinc, iron, calcium, and phosphorus. It is in line with the daily requirement of cholesterol of our body. So, if you eat one egg per day then there will be no problem with cholesterol level.

4. Drinking water while eating food makes you Fat: –

The fact hidden behind this misconception is that drinking water while eating food dilutes various enzymes and digestive juices and this will slow down your digestion process, which can lead to an increase in excess fat in your body. On the contrary, it is a scientific fact that drinking water while eating food improves your digestion.

5. Don’t take milk immediately after eating Fish: –

Most people believe that you should not drink milk immediately after eating fish, they believe that this will make you sick. Some people believe that it can cause spots on your skin. In fact, there is no scientific reason behind drinking milk after eating fish. The reality is that you can consume both of them together. There is no problem with this.

6. Starve yourself if you want to lose weight: –

Eating well is more important when you are looking to reduce your weight. Include things in your diet that suppress your appetite and increase your metabolism so that you don’t overeat. So if you want to reduce your weight then there is no need to starve yourself.

7. Exercise forces you to eat more: –

Exercise burns calories, which can increase your appetite. Research studies done in this area have shown that people who exercise do not eat more food than people who do not exercise. So there is no truth in this statement.
